McKenzie Friends, commonly utilised in jurisdictions like England and Wales, provide aid to those representing themselves in family court. Offering practical and emotional support without legal expertise, they stem from the 1970 McKenzie v. McKenzie case, enabling a friend to assist unrepresented litigants.

McKenzie Friends offer divorce assistance, including moral support, note-taking, case paper assistance, and general advice. While they can’t directly address the court or advocate without permission, they stand as a lawyer-free alternative, highlighting the non-essential nature of legal representation and providing significant support throughout proceedings.
